► That the merchandise can be loaded directly into the container or barge, so packaging costs are reduced, if not eliminated.
► That container cargoes are subject to much less damage and pilferage than break-bulk shipments. Among other things, this results in lower insurance rates.
► That deliveries are made quickly as a result of the rapid loading and unloading of intermodal ships and the high sea speeds so many of them enjoy. The ease of loading and unloading LASH vessels, for example, has reduced port time by 70 per cent over that of conventional break-bulk ships. This faster turnaround time results in more frequent sailings, which means better service for the shipper. The speed of most of these ships, of course, also contributes to this end.
Intermodal ships are among the most productive ships in the world. Each SL-7 containership has a carrying capacity equal to that of 6.5 conventional cargo ships; similarly, a LASH is the equivalent of 4.2 conventional ships.
These increases in productivity, moreover, are being accomplished at the same time that crew sizes are being reduced. New intermodal ships have crews of 25 to 32 men, as compared with the 40 to 50 men needed to operate older freighters. This has an enormous bearing on economy of operation.
Of the 152 ships described here in detail, 72 are new ships built for the job: 41 containerships, 23 barge ships, and eight roll-on roll-off ships. Another 20 are fairly recent former break-bulk freighters converted into containerships. The remaining 60 ships are very old. Of these 55 are containerships converted from freighters and tankers built in World War II. Two more are able to carry railroad cars as well as containers, and three carry automobiles and containers between Hawaii and the Coast.
All the ships listed here arc driven by steam turbine except the Adm. Wm. Af. Callaghan, which has gas turbines and twin screws. And all except she and the huge fast SL-7 class are single-screw ships. The SL-7S plus two of the SL-iss, are further distinguished from the other ships listed here by having been built abroad, seven having been constructed in West Germany and three in the Netherlands. Their foreign construction, of course, makes them ineligible for subsidy from the federal government.
In the descriptions, containerships are shown as either self-sustaining or nonself-sustaining. The former group, consisting mainly of older ships, can load and unload without outside help. The latter group cannot. Additionally, the deadweight tonnages of the ships in a class may vary by several hundred tons; when this occurs the maximum (highest) tonnage is listed.
The description of American intermodal ships that follows is complete save for the partial containerships sailing under the U. S. flag. According to the Maritime Administration’s strict definition, only those general cargo ships that have one or more of their holds permanently fitted with cellular structures are considered partial containerships. By this strict standard, there are approximately 30 partial containerships in the U. S. merchant fleet. Other sources, however, include another 50 or so ships with considerable container-carrying capabilities. Altogether, there are some 85 partial containerships listed below. Though none of these ships is illustrated, each ship’s year of completion, speed, and deadweight tonnage is shown. As a type the partial container- ships have a major advantage over the full containerships, since they are usually self-sustaining.
